Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year developmental kindergarten program. It is designed to build a solid foundation for success in school for young five-year-olds. The program is funded by the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 that changed the kindergarten entry date in 2014/2015 to September 1st.
So what does Transitional Kindergarten look like? Think of it as a hybrid that combines the essential foundations of preschool with the California Common Core Standards for Kindergarten, nurturing each child’s intellectual and socio-emotional growth.
Children born between September 2, 2019, and June 2, 2020, may be enrolled in TK for the 2024-2025 school year. TK is a half-day program with classes being held at all of our district’s elementary campuses for the upcoming school year. Our district welcomes all students who fall within the age eligibility for TK!
If the student’s birthdate falls within the TK enrollment window, they must be admitted to transitional kindergarten. The enrollment windows are as follows:
If the student’s birthdate falls outside of the TK enrollment window, they legally cannot be admitted to transitional kindergarten.
If the student’s birthdate falls outside of the TK enrollment window but the student will be five years old prior to September 2, the student is eligible to be considered for admission to transitional kindergarten by parent request prior to the start of the school year if space is available.
If the student begins the school year in kindergarten and the child’s teacher feels they may be more appropriately served in a TK classroom, the following steps must be completed:
