When should I keep my student home from school?

This brochure aims to provide parents with valuable information, practical tips, and guides to help prevent the spread of illnesses among children.

COVID-19 Protocols for TK-12 School Settings in Santa Barbara County

Testing

  • Screening testing of asymptomatic individuals is NO longer a CDPH recommendation.
  • Testing and treatment are recommended for those with symptoms of illness who are at higher risk.
  • Testing is recommended for those at higher risk of severe illness or in contact with those at higher risk of severe illness who shared airspace exposure per CDPH.

Returning to School if Symptomatic

  • Students are encouraged to stay home until 24 hours fever-free without medication and when other symptoms of illness are mild and improving.
  • Students are encouraged to report positivity to the school.
  • Public Health recommends students wear a well-fitting mask around others indoors for a total of 5 days after returning to normal activities, avoid those who are higher risk or live in a high-risk setting, and practice healthy habits (hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, etc.).

Positive Test (recommendations for students)

A confirmed symptomatic positive case of COVID-19 may return to school when all of the following are true:

  1. 24 hours have passed from symptom onset
  2. Fever-free for 24 hours with no fever-reducing medication
  3. Symptoms are no longer present or are mild and improving
  4. Use a mask indoors as recommended by CDPH for 5 days

When can my student return to school after illness?

Ensure your child meets all of the following criteria before sending them back to school:

  • Fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication
  • No vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours
  • Improvement in symptoms, such as cough, congestion, or sore throat
  • Complete any recommended treatment or medication course

Essential Steps to Prevent Illness

Practice proper hand hygiene

Teach your child the importance of handwashing, especially before eating and after using the restroom use soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Cover coughs & sneezes

Teach your child to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow.

Ensure vaccinations are up to date

Follow the recommended vaccination schedule for your child's age.

Promote healthy habits

Encourage a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.  Provide regular exercise and physical activity opportunities to ensure your child gets enough sleep and rest for optimal health.

Keep children home when sick

Symptoms that require keeping your child home from school follow the recommended duration for specific illness; returning to school too soon may delay recovery from illness and may expose others. Communicate with the school regarding your child's absence.
