Save the Date - Hancock President Speaking on Leadership at OAHS

Posted Date: 1/15/25 (:35 AM)

Dr. Kevin Walthers, superintendent/president of Allan Hancock College, will be the featured speaker at a “Leadership Unplugged” event held in the Orcutt Academy High School (OAHS) Gym on Monday, February 3, at 6:00 p.m. All OAHS students, families, and staff are invited to attend.

Organized by the Supporting Orcutt Academy’s Academic Resources (SOAAR) Foundation, the event will follow a format inviting Dr. Walthers to speak candidly and unfiltered about leadership initiatives and challenges in his field, then engaging OAHS students in a facilitated question-and-answer period. In his talk Dr. Walthers will describe Hancock’s work to provide local high school graduates two years of free tuition through the Hancock Promise initiative as well as the college’s ongoing effort to grant bachelor’s degrees.

“Dr. Walthers is an educational leader who truly has changed the odds for local students, and it will be an honor to have him address the Orcutt Academy school community,” says SOAAR board member and Orcutt Union School District (OUSD) Assistant Superintendent Joe Dana. “He and Hancock have been indispensable partners in delivering early college options and career pathways to our students.”

Walthers is in his 12th year as Allan Hancock College’s superintendent/president. He is involved in numerous community organizations, including the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce, Marian Regional Medical Center, Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary and Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley. He and his family reside in Orcutt.

“I admire how active Dr. Walthers is in our community and how he has provided opportunities such as the Early College Cadre to Orcutt Academy High School students,” adds Mark Steller, SOAAR board president and member of the OUSD Board of Trustees. “I am excited to hear him speak.”

The event will be free, and everyone is invited to attend. SOAAR is a nonprofit foundation that supports academic offerings at OAHS and the Orcutt Academy K-8 campus. SOAAR also offers and coordinates scholarships for students graduating from OAHS.
